Wood grain has a depth and warmth that is very engaging. Used in combination with paint or other materials, the contrast can be dynamic. This exhibition, juried by Brian Ferrel, features work created with wood where shape, material, and surface texture imply compositional movement. Brian Ferrell is a Southwestern Pennsylvania artists who creates sculpture in functional forms, designing one-of-a-kind furniture and custom tableware. Since 2000, his work has been regularly exhibited in group and solo exhibits on a national level, published in "500 Tables" and "Pewter Studio" by Kark Books, and purchased by private collectors in the US and Europe. In the summer of 2008 he was honored with a solo exhibition at Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and in 2010 recieved a full page review in American Craft magazine for his exhibition at the Appalachian Center for Craft (Smithville, TN). Ferrell currently lives and maintains an active studio in Greensburg, PA where he is also Assistant Professor of Art at Seton Hill University of Pennsylvania, and an MFA in Metals from the Program in Artisanry at University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth. This a free event. It is held from February 4-25, 2012. The reception is Saturday, February 4, 2012, 7:00 till 9:00 PM.

Equal parts poetry and soul, this virtuosic feat of acting portrays a range of eclectic characters – a precocious 10-year-old boy, an overweight bishop, a college student escaping the projects, and more. Each unforgettable voice reveals the hope, courage, and determination we all need to make it through the night. The New York Times calls Through the Night “a thing of beauty.”

While there, the artist interviewed and recorded eleven Egyptian artists who had been active participants in the protests, either in Cairo's Tahrir Square, or in Alexandria. Inspired by the chant heard in Cairo during those days, they’ve named the project "One Hand/ One Voice." Their stories provide a rich personal framework for what it means to be denied the rights of free speech and assembly. The recordings are also intimate examples of the power of non-violent protests, inspired by a fierce sense of civic commitment and shared injustice. Thuma’s students from the University of Pittsburgh will have the rare opportunity to transform the transcripts of the Egyptian artists’ interviews into dramatic monologues performed in the Mattress Factory’s lobby.

Curator Tour

"Sites of Passage" Cook's Tour

Saturday, February 11, 2012

2pm

1414 Monterey St. Galleries

FREE with paid museum admission

FREE for Members, CMU, PITT & PPU Students w/ID

Join curator Tavia La Follette as she gives a tour of our current "Sites of Passage" exhibition from 1 to 2pm on Saturday, January 21st.
